Our Story

Boasting an increasingly diverse design portfolio, Phoenix Design One is a major player in the Southwest. As a full service interior architecture firm, PDO completes approximately 3 million square feet each year. PDO has been the recipient of numerous awards, including being named the NAIOP Interior Architect of the Year seven times.

Fred Messner, LEED® AP

Founding Partner

After graduating ASU, Fred’s first job was with a large architectural firm in Phoenix. Learning the craft of ground-up construction during his tenure there, he saw a need in the marketplace for a focus in interior architecture especially as a growing number of buildings during that time were coming out of the ground speculatively. Fred left his position with a partner to start Phoenix Design One in 1984 and has been a visionary for the firm up to his recent retirement in 2020. Over the years, Fred has created a clientele base of building owners, property managers and brokers that rely on PDO’s expertise in creating interiors that are efficient, well designed, and great looking. Some of Fred’s original clients are still retained to this day. Over the years Fred was highly active in professional associations including ASID, IIDA, CCID, NCIDQ, LEED and EDAC. He was a standing juror for NCIDQ for many years and helped form the Arizona chapter of ASID. Later in his career he found a passion in designing shell building public and social spaces and was the principal designer on several new buildings in the Valley. His keen sense of translating his client’s vision into architecture brought the likes of many well-known clientele including Mesa Air, First Solar, Drivetime, Wells Fargo and Red Bull. His commitment to good design was passed along to his team over the years and can be seen in the tenure of his partners and senior staff members combining over 90 years of experience amongst them. Fred and his wife Julia reside in the area and enjoy visiting their cabin in Crown King as well as traveling to the Upper Peninsula to Fred’s family home. He loves camping, working with his hands and making his own spirits during the holidays. His legacy lives on in the studio through PDO’s unmatched level of responsiveness and creativity.
