Today’s office is more than a place to work; it is a space to discover new ideas, socialize, and collaborate on creative endeavors. At the national architecture, interiors, and planning firm, RDC, workspaces reflect the spirit of a practice that balances aesthetics, functionality, and purpose. The firm’s new DC Metro Area office, designed by Phoenix Design One (PDO) and home to RDC’s National Retail architecture studio, is designed as an environment where creative thinking and client collaboration can thrive.
“We chose One Loudoun as our new office location for the dynamic mix of retail and dining amenities. It’s more than a retail district. It is a DC Metro destination where our clients and staff can gather and collaborate,” said RDC Principal Joseph Serruya. “Our culture is that we embrace hybrid work and where our time spent in the office is one to look forward to, enhanced by the experiences within our space and community.”
The new 2,400-square-foot studio embraces comfort, clarity, brightness, and flow. Floor-to-ceiling windows fill the space with natural light, supporting a versatile layout designed for both focused work and dynamic teamwork. At the core of the space is a spacious kitchen, thoughtfully designed to serve as the social hub of the office. This area draws inspiration from the home kitchen island concept and reflects the evolution of hybrid work culture.
Serruya worked together with PDO Principal Sophia Humphrey, to create a hospitality-inspired concept for the new RDC workplace, complete with soft seating options, enclosed and open meeting spaces, large collaboration tables, and both dedicated and flexible workstations for our visiting team members. The result is a welcoming environment that reflects the way RDC’s clients and project teams unite.
Together, the RDC and PDO teams curated a thoughtful blend of materials, finishes, and textures that bring warmth and definition to the studio. The space offers a natural palette of concrete floors, exposed ceilings, acoustical fixtures, tectum panels, and ash wood-look millwork, all chosen to celebrate the raw honesty of architectural materials.
“As the newest member of the RDC family, this project was especially rewarding for PDO,” said Humphrey. “The way this space interacts with employees and clients, and the special touches that make it uniquely RDC, were carefully selected, designed to celebrate this team and all they bring to the DC market and our industry.”
Adding an individualized touch, the studio features a custom triptych created by RDC Project Architect Veronica Guzman that expresses the history and transformation of Loudoun County from the 1950’s to the present. “I wanted the artwork to feel rooted in place- to visually show how much this landscape has changed over time,” Guzman said.
The new RDC DC Metro office reflects the core values of the firm’s National Retail practice: collaboration, purpose, and a people-centered approach to design. The office marks an important step in RDC’s growth and serves as a hub for clients, partners, and team members. As the firm continues to expand nationwide, RDC is welcoming talented architects and interior designers interested in shaping the future of retail and mixed-use design.
